Ear Pinning for Children
The majority of children who undergo otoplasty are between 4 and 14 years old, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Prominent ears are the result of a congenital abnormality in that they are present from birth and will only increase. Prominent ears are evident from an early age and become more obvious as a child grows. There are several advantages to correction of the ear at a relatively young age. The main one is to avoid the psychological issues of a child being teased at school.
In regards to the child’s otoplasty, the plastic surgeon generally recommends ear pinning for children who are between four to six years old. Children are not body-conscious until age six or seven, and thus correction at an earlier age prevents children from being teased. In addition, a child’s ear cartilage is very soft, pliable, and easily moldable at this age, which helps in some of the technical aspects of cosmetic ear surgery.

Otoplasty for Adults
Otoplasty for adults is different than ‘pinning back’ the ears (which is more of a pre-adolescent corrective procedure). Correcting protruding and asymmetrical ears in adults is a cosmetic procedure to re-position one or both of the ears. This is typically achieved by tightening the skin back, towards the head.
Ear surgery is common among teens and adults whose self-esteem about their appearance is affected by having protruding, large or imbalanced ears or require surgery due to an injury such as a dog bite.
